Starting in 2021 and moving forward, Uruguayan nationals planning a trip to the Schengen Area will need to apply for an ETIAS for Uruguayan Citizens. The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a new initiative that will act as a visa waiver system for nationals of 60 countries when entering the Schengen Area. It will replace the entry agreements currently in place between the Schengen Area and these countries and is intended to strengthen European border control, fight terrorism, and improve public safety for both Schengen residents and visitors alike. The ETIAS for Uruguayan Citizens does not guarantee entry into the Schengen Area, as the ultimate decision to admit or deny visitors rests with Schengen border control officials. However, once an ETIAS holder enters the Schengen Area, the ETIAS grants them the freedom to travel anywhere within the 26 Schengen member states.
Uruguayans planning to visit the Schengen Area will need to apply for and obtain their ETIAS for Uruguayan Citizens before they arrive at their Schengen port of entry. However, the ETIAS Application for Uruguayans can be completed entirely online, meaning that it is not necessary for Uruguayans to visit a physical embassy or consulate in order to obtain their ETIAS. This electronic application process also allows Uruguayan citizens who are outside Uruguay to submit their ETIAS application from a third country if they are traveling or living abroad.
Once it has been granted, the ETIAS for Uruguayan Citizens allows a stay of up to 90 days within a single 180-day period within the borders of the Schengen Area. Uruguayan ETIAS holders may exit and re-enter the Schengen Area multiple times during this period, but cannot “reset” the allotted 90-day period by doing so.
What Documents Do Uruguayans Need to Obtain ETIAS?
ETIAS Requirements for Uruguayan Citizens dictate that in order to submit an ETIAS application, applicants must hold a valid Uruguayan passport. The passport used must be valid at the time of application, and must remain valid for three months or longer following the holder’s planned date of entry into the Schengen territory.
In addition, anyone submitting an ETIAS Application for Uruguayans is obligated to have the following items at their disposal:
- A valid debit or credit card which can be used to pay the ETIAS application/processing fee
- A working email address with which to send and receive notifications regarding their application, such as application status updates, the final decision on whether their application has been accepted or rejected, and any communication relating to the appeal of this decision, if necessary
How to Apply for ETIAS from Uruguay
The ETIAS Application for Uruguayans involves completing and submitting an ETIAS application form online. Once submitted, this application will be reviewed by European authorities, and the information in it will be compared to a variety of European security databases.
The ETIAS Application for Uruguayans is a relatively simple form and shouldn’t take more than ten minutes to complete. However, applicants should review the information they have provided carefully before submission, as the smallest error in their details could result in processing delays or even the outright rejection of their ETIAS application.
To obtain an ETIAS for Uruguayan Citizens, travelers must be prepared to submit the following points of information about themselves:
- Personal details like full name, gender, date of birth, and birthplace
- Contact details including phone number, email address, and home address
- Passport details, specifically, passport number, date of issue, place of issue, and expiry date
- Travel plans/schedule/itinerary for the traveler’s planned stay in the Schengen Area, including, most importantly, their intended port of entry into Schengen territory
Travelers will also be required to provide some information concerning their health status and criminal history when submitting their ETIAS Application for Uruguayans.
Once an ETIAS application is approved, the applicant will be notified via email. Travelers should then print a hard copy of this notification and carry it with them to present to transport authorities upon departure from Uruguay or to border officials upon entry into the Schengen Area.
It is projected that roughly 95% of ETIAS applications will be successfully accepted. For those applications that are rejected, applicants will be able to submit an appeal directly to the Schengen member state they intend to enter first. This state will then handle the appeal within its own, individual legislative system.
How Long Does It Take to Get ETIAS from Uruguay?
Most Uruguayan nationals can expect to receive their approved ETIAS for Uruguayan Citizens within minutes after successfully submitting their completed application, as long as the information they have included on their form is accurate and complete. However, processing delays are possible, and in order to avoid any travel upsets, applicants should take steps to ensure that they will have their ETIAS before the date on which they intend to depart for the Schengen Area.
