ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System and it’s a travel authorization for citizens of eligible countries who wish to visit any country in the Schengen area. The ETIAS is expected to come into effect by 2021 and it will be available for 60 eligible countries globally.
This is not to be mistaken with the Schengen Visa which is already in place for many countries outside the EU and Schengen Area and that has to be requested at a consulate. The ETIAS on the other hand will be implemented for those countries that currently are not required to possess a visa to enter the Schengen Area.
The purpose of the ETIAS is to strengthen the borders of the Schengen Area by checking the data of travelers even before they enter the area. Travelers will need to submit an online application prior to their trip. Given that this is an entirely online procedure, there will be no need to go to an embassy.
Are Chilean Citizens Eligible to Apply for ETIAS Visa Waiver?
Yes, Chilean citizens are eligible to apply for the ETIAS visa waiver. Once their ETIAS is approved, they can enter the Schengen Area for short-term stays of up to 90 days. The ETIAS for Chilean citizens allows traveling for tourism and business purposes as well as medical and transit purposes.
Visitors will then be able to travel to any country within the Schengen area without any additional travel authorization since there are no internal hard borders within the area.
The ETIAS will allow Chilean citizens multiple entries in the Schengen area, as long as each stay is no longer than 90 days in a 180 days period.
Important: It is not allowed to work or study when traveling to a country of the Schengen Area with an ETIAS. For these activities, travelers will need to apply for a visa at the consulate of the country they plan on conducting the work or study in.

The ETIAS Application Process for Chilean Citizens
The ETIAS application for Chilean citizens will be an easy and fast process, entirely online, that can be completed within ten minutes.
Applications will be screened using security databases including Interpol and Europol. Shortly after the application has been processed, applicants will receive a notification via email informing them of one of the following:
- Their ETIAS has been approved.
- Their ETIAS has been denied. A justification for the denial will be provided.
In the case of denial, applicants will have the right to appeal. The appeal will be made to the individual Schengen member state, the one indicated in the application as the country of arrival. Applicants will be kept up to date regarding the appeal process and in case of an unsuccessful appeal, they will have the right to request information from the national authority regarding the reason for their visa denial.
However, in most cases the appeal will lead to approval, after providing some additional documentation.
Chilean citizens should check ETIAS requirements before starting the application process, to make sure they have all the necessary documentation. This allows for a smoother and faster process.
How Long Does It Take to Get ETIAS From Chile?
Given that the initial screening process is completely automated, in most cases, it can take just a few minutes for applications to be processed and up to 72 hours.
In some cases, the application might need to go through a manual screening that will be conducted by staff of the ETIAS Central Unit and ETIAS National Units. In these cases, the application will take a little longer.
Note: ETIAS is required for all Chilean travelers, including infants. However, people under the age of 18 will be exempt from paying the fee.
