ETIAS Visa Waiver for Finland

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System or ETIAS is a new visa waiver program that is meant to strengthen the borders of the Schengen Area.

This means many of the non-EU citizens that are currently allowed to visit Europe visa-free will need approval before entering the EU. Tourists will need an ETIAS visa waiver for Finland.

Not to be confused with a standard travel visa, the ETIAS screens all applicants prior to their visit to Finland. ETIAS is an electronic travel authorisation that can be completed through an online form. Once visitors are approved they are able to move freely throughout Finland and the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days.

However, as of 2025, there will be this added security measure. It is important to know that this is the same for all Schengen member countries, not just for Finland.

Finland, the EU, and the Schengen Area

Finland is a Finnish and Swedish speaking country located in Northern Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland has a stable economy and a high standard of living for its citizens.

Finland has been a part of the European Union since 1995 and a member of the Schengen Area since 2001. The currency is the euro. As part of the Schengen Zone, most non-EU tourists will need a Finnish ETIAS as of 2025.

There will still be no hard borders within the Schengen Area. Additionally, once approved, the ETIAS visa waiver allows up to 90 days of free travel within the zone.

The only change with the ETIAS is that tourists entering the EU will go through a pre-check to ensure travellers pose no threat and are safe to enter Europe.

Who needs ETIAS to travel to Finland?

There are over 50 countries that are required to apply for an ETIAS if they wish to travel throughout Europe. Many of these citizens currently do not need a visa or travel permit to enter the EU.

However, once the system is in place, citizens of these non-EU countries will have to apply for ETIAS Finland before they travel to the country.

Once applicants are screened and approved, they are able to travel within the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days. ETIAS allows people to visit the countries found within the Schengen Zone for tourist, business, medical, and transit purposes.
