Currently, many non-EU citizens do not need a visa to visit Europe. This is set to change in 2021. Those who are non-EU citizens will need an ETIAS visa waiver for Sweden in order to enter the country and travel throughout the Schengen Area.
The European Travel Information and Authorization System or ETIAS is a visa waiver program that is meant to strengthen the borders of the Schengen Zone. This is done by keeping a record of non-EU visitors who travel to Sweden, as well as the entirety of the Schengen Zone.
The ETIAS is an added security measure that screens all applicants prior to their arrival in Sweden. It is important to know that this is the same for all EU countries found within the Schengen Area, not just for Sweden. Once visitors are approved they are able to move freely throughout the Schengen Zone for up to 90 days.
Sweden, the EU, and the Schengen Area
Located in Northern Europe, Sweden is a Scandinavian country located in between Finland and Norway. The official language is Swedish and the Swedish krona is the currency with plans to soon commit to the euro.
Sweden has been a member of the EU since 1995 and joined the Schengen Area in 2001. The Schengen Area is made up of 26 countries. The purpose of this area is to function as one jurisdiction for international travel.
Once the area is entered, a visitor can travel around without hard borders or additional passport controls. As a part of the Schengen Zone, tourists who have a Swedish ETIAS can travel around Sweden and to any of the other Schengen countries.
Who Needs ETIAS to Travel to Sweden?
Once the system is in place, citizens of Non-EU countries must have an approved ETIAS before they visit Sweden or any of the other Schengen countries. Currently, there are over 60 countries that are required to apply for an ETIAS if they wish to travel around Europe.
Even those who are currently allowed to travel to Europe visa-free will need an ETIAS beginning in 2021. The ETIAS Sweden allows people to visit Sweden and the countries found within the Schengen Zone for tourist, business, medical, and transit purposes.
